The Lowdown On Table The Table Tennis Robot

By Chelsea Evans

Have you ever wondered what a table tennis robot actually is and what it takes to build such a machine. No-one is saying that such a machine will rival the best players on the planet just yet but it's a step in that direction. If you're a player that needs a training partner, then these could very well fit the bill.

They've been specially designed to make sure they can play the game to a reasonable standard. They imitate the motion that are needed in the actual game and translate that to hitting balls back and forth with you. Like any human opponent, they are able to adjust the speed of their shots and the angles. Like any human player, they are not 100% perfect with their shots but that's why they have nets to the rear to collect errant balls.

There are a few types of these machines around but usually they are similar in the way they work. They normally have controls that can be programmed by the user, with boxes that control the bot attached to the table itself. Rear nets mean that all balls can be fed back into the machine.

You do not have to be a table tennis wizard or genius to use these bots. In fact, for mediocre players they are just as good as for better players, because they're designed to help you improve. What you'll most likely find is that your reactions speed up as your game develops and you'll make faster decisions. One thing that's fairly important is to ensure you have a sound technique as these machines are not actual coaches who can improve that side of your game. In essence, if you already have terrible technique you'll be reinforcing it by continually playing the same shots.

Something that is sometimes overlooked with these bots is the fact they can really be of help if you wish to get fitter. They'll have you playing faster than ever and kids can play on them all day. Because they're on their feet it could well be a better form of exercise than playing video games.

Because the game can be played in a reasonably small area it can be put in a garage or basement and does not have to take up space in the home. And if you play on a regular basis, you could find that not only your game improves, but you're getting into shape due to the use of different muscle groups.

Some of the robots are more complex than others. Robotics has been going for some years now and, as the projects get more and more complex, the bots will develop more advanced artificial intelligence. Already some of them can balance on two feet and walk. Others also have the ability to use motion control and recognize fast moving objects.

If you have your heart set on buying a table tennis robot, then make sure it's purchased from a dealer that has a good reputation. Do a little research and find out which one might be best for helping you improve your game.
