Common Sense Alternative Media In America

By Miranda Sweeney

There is an agency working to assure that all media is age appropriate. The Common Sense Alternative Media and associated website provides parents a plethora of information. Often the organization may recommend alternative programming based on current popular titles. At others, programming can be edited to create a "clean" version without the drugs, sex and violence found in the original.

The organization's mission is to advocate, educate and rate programming for children, teens and families. The organization not only provides information on movies and television programming but also on apps, books, games, websites, newsletters, newszines and other publications.

An "Editor's Pick, " section of the website provides what the editor of the website considers the best of everything from apps and movies to television shows and websites. In the News and Topics with discussions on issues like "bullying, " and other topics based on current events round out the section.

A Video section provides previews of first run movies and those yet to be released. There is also a section for reviews written by a variety of contributors. A parents and educator blog has put an end to the dreaded in-school parent teacher conference. Educators and parents can now discuss issues on the blog or video blog at times convenient for both parties.

Providing information and insight on the intention of Congress to take over the Internet landed the organization in the news. In one document, it specifies a mission of the organization is to wake up the American people as to just how many freedoms are being taken away on a daily basis. This leak about Congress and the internet, whether true or otherwise, almost meant the end for the organization while somewhat proving the theory true.

Censorship is, has and always will be a controversial issue. It is also an issue based on personal preference. When moving into the space of other human beings, it is still nice to be polite. Most often, one of the primary complaints is against people using bad language. If people can start behaving appropriately when in crowds of mixed age, size and race, it would be a far better world.

When it comes to sex and violence in apps, games, movies and television, it can often be hard to resist allowing children to play games or watch movies. This is why those involved with Common Sense Media have developed a database with alternative programming. Alternative programming can be an almost duplicate of an original, or similar in content and theme. The main difference is that it tells the story without the sex, drugs and rock and roll found in most programming.

When a child lives in harmony and balance with body, mind and spirit, most often the child is a healthy one. A child needs the guidance and direction of the parents to assure proper behavior in school and society at large. A plethora of documents on the internet can provide some great ideas on how to reward positive behavior while overlooking negative type behaviors in teens and younger children. Most who have rare but necessary parental attention and love grow up to be outstanding members of society.
