The Rigorous Life Of A Dancer

By Leslie Griffith

The life of a dancer is quite rigorous. Those who strive to make this their career usually start learning at a very young age. To excel in this profession requires hard work and devotion. Some see this career as glamorous, but in reality it is quite challenging.

For those who choose this as a career, the first thing needed is self discipline. Hours of every day must be devoted to improving your techniques. Expect to practice for literally hours each day. This includes not only dancing, but strengthening and stretching your muscles. Your body must be fine tuned to do all the movement entailed in being a professional dancer.

The type of training involved can vary as much as the different dance styles vary. Exercises for someone studying ballet can be quite different than someone studying ballroom dancing. For any type of dance, the body needs to be physically fit. Eating healthily is an absolute must. Weight gain can throw off the balance of the performance. You must always be in top form.

Practicing and rehearsing are always on the to do list. It is usually vital to learn various choreographed routines. Getting a job on a show is no easy feat. First comes an audition. Expect the competition to be brutal. Only a few will probably be picked even though hundreds or thousands may audition. That is why following a very strict schedule of practice and rehearsals is necessary. If you have perfected your style, you may be the one that will stand out from the crowd.

Once you win the audition, the hard work begins in earnest. Rehearsals takes hours and hours to get the movements perfect. The show itself is a whole other story. You have to be in perfect form now. You will likely start very early in the day and not finish until well into the night. Tiredness and frustration cannot take over. If they do, the performance will suffer. The true professional makes the audience think the movements are all effortless. They do not know just how hard you have worked.

It takes an extremely dedicated person to do this every single day. Even if your muscles and joints are aching, you must carry on. However, if you truly have a passion for dancing, this will be no problem. For those who really love expressing themselves through the movement of dance, it will show each time you get on the stage.

Anyone who has a true passion for dancing knows the rewards are worth any and all hardships suffered. Though you may not get rich with money, you will get riches of another kind. The applause, along with the knowledge that you have done your best is a satisfaction that money cannot buy. It can be a dream come true when you are on stage and look out at an appreciative audience.

There is nothing more graceful than a talented performer. Even though the life of a dancer can be quite strenuous, for most it is worth all the hard work. If this is something you are thinking of pursuing, just be prepared to devote most of your time to perfecting your techniques. If you do succeed, it will have been time very well spent.
